When she’s not cattle wrangling or spitting tobacco into a milk churn, Debbie sits in an easy chair with her mongrel Chihuahua, Gloria, writing about entitled, self-interested scumbags, women with plastic souls, gold diggers, and orgies on the astral plane. Her music is semi-biographical and rootsy and is made in the spirit of carnival and collaboration with players of all ages and disparate geographies. She’s also a mystic… come looking and you’ll find her reading the tarot and communicating with other people’s dead relatives.
Evil Man takes us on a journey into Debbie’s world. Sonics borrowed from Dolly Parton and JJ Cale, beats and hooks from Donna Summer, and that squirming narrative vocal in the tradition of Bob Dylan and the Delta Blues. Creep on her sisters and she’ll cut your hands off – no doubt about it.
Production notes
This record is a mixture of country and disco sonics and to finish it off we needed a big chorus with lots of layers and a sassy delivery. Caitlin jumped in to help us out and the results are tasty. We used ribbon mics as drum overheads and the girls sang their vocals into them too.
All in all, it’s a crunchy vintage sound with plenty of guts and character. Debbie is a big fan of 70’s music, so we were definitely drawn to warmer-sounding mics and processing for this recording. Debbie was involved in every stage of the production from conception to mixing and has a very minimal and exacting attitude towards arrangement and presentation: “Keep it simple: keep it punchy”.
